Capture One 21 (14.4.0) update released, brings back Exporter features

Capture One has announced the Capture One 21 (14.4.0) update, which is available now for all Capture One 21 users. The update includes new camera and lens support, new features, plus a significant update to the Exporter, based on user feedback.

Looking first at the Exporter. In July, Capture One released 14.3.0, which redesigned the Exporter experience. However, what was meant to be an improvement and overall simplification, was not a universal upgrade for all users. Some users strongly preferred the old Exporter and were upset that their workflows were disrupted. Capture One writes, 'As Capture One stands committed to ensuring our software develops in a way that includes the functionality critical to the workflow of many professional photographers, we are pleased to restore that functionality that many asked to return.'

With today's update, all tools from the Exporter are now available in the primary window of Capture One. Capture One states that 'they can be added as a pre-made Export Tool Tab by right-clicking the Tool Tab bar and selecting Add Tool Tab > Export.' You can also add any Export tools individually to any Tool Tab or drag them out as floating tools. The available Export tools are Export Adjustments, Export Cross Recipe Tokens (new), Export Format & Size, Export Location, Export Metadata, Export Naming, Export Queue (reintroduced), Export Recipes, Export Summary, and Export Watermark. Additional information regarding Cross Recipe Tokens can be viewed here.

Capture One 14.4.0 includes new features, as well, including tethering for Sigma fp and fp L cameras. Currently, supported functionality includes file transfer and exposure triggering from Capture One. Users can also change camera settings, use basic live view and autofocus from the connected computer. There are some known issues with corrupted DNG files, but Capture One notes that an upcoming camera firmware update will address the issue.

The new Capture One update also adds general camera support for the Fujifilm GFX 50S II, Nikon Z fc, Olympus Pen E-P7 and Pentax 645Z. Regarding Fujifilm cameras, you can now change camera settings on a tethered Fujifilm camera. New lens support has been added for the Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HSM Art (Sony E), Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art (Sony E), Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro Art (Sony E), Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN (Sony E) and Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS II USM + 1.4x III teleconverter.

Fujifilm GFX 50S II

In terms of computer support, Capture One 21 (14.4.0) is supported on macOS Big Sur 11.6. On both Windows and macOS, users should see improved catalog performance. Further, it's now easier to adjust the Magic Brush. You can now use similar shortcut actions as the regular Adjustment Brush. To see the list of shortcut command actions, visit the Support page.

It's worth noting that the ongoing Capture One 21 to Capture One 22 Upgrade promotion is still active until October 4 at 6:00 PM ET. You can learn more about this promotion by reading our earlier coverage. Capture One 22 will be launching this December.

TTartisan teases its first AF lens, a 32mm F2.8 for multiple full-frame, APS-C camera systems

TTartisan has announced it will soon release a 32mm F2.8, its first autofocus lens. Very little information about the lens is revealed, aside from the mount options, which will include Canon RF, Canon EOS M, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z and Sony E mount camera systems.

As it stands, this particular focal length is going up against quite a bit of competition in nearly every lens mount it’ll be offered in. The F2.8 aperture isn’t exactly inspiring, so its selling point across all lens mounts will likely be its price point, which hasn’t yet been announced.

We'll share another article when the lens and its more detailed specifications are released.

EyePhone: How one doctor is using the iPhone 13 Pro's macro capabilities to remotely assess patients

One of the new camera features in Apple’s new iPhone 13 Pro lineup is a macro photography mode, made possible by the devices’ ultrawide camera module. While this new macro capability can be used for your more conventional macro photography, one ophthalmologist has discovered the feature can also be used for the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders.

In a pair of posts on his LinkedIn profile, first discovered by 9to5Mac, ophthalmologist Tommy Korn, MD shares how he’s been using the new macro capabilities of the new iPhone 13 Pro models in conjunction with virtual appointments to keep up with his patients’ eye health from afar by having them capture macro photographs of their own eyes and send them to his team for analysis. These ‘high quality macro eye photos,’ Dr. Korn says, allow him and his team to ‘rapidly identify eye emergencies.’

In the above images, used with permission from Dr. Korn, we see a patient using the macro capabilities of their iPhone 13 Pro to capture a close-up of their eye, which recently underwent a cornea transplant. By capturing these images and sending them to Dr. Korn, both the patient and Dr. Korn can ensure the surgery is healing as it should without needing to go into the office.

Close-up photographs of a patient's eye are captured to ensure their eye is recovering post-surgery for a cornea transplant.

Even before Apple’s new iPhone 13 Pro, Dr. Korn has been using iPhones to help improve eye care, particularly in more senior patients. Previously, Dr. Korn and his team used an iPhone adapted to a Nikkor 105mm Macro to get a closer look at patients’ eyes. He then built a rig that used an iPhone mounted onto a slit lamp to both view and capture close-up shots of a patient’s eye.

Dr. Korn, who's a 'long[time] fan of DPReview,' tells us the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max will only further improve his efforts to improve telehealth by allowing patients to capture close-up photos of their own eyes to send in, which not only saves time and resources, but ensures care for those who would otherwise be unable to make it into an eye clinic.

Tamron releases 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di III-A travel zoom for Fujifilm X-mount

Tamron has just released the launch date and pricing information of the previously announced 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD lens for Fujifilm X-Mount and Sony E-mount cameras. Offering a 16.6x zoom ratio that translates to a rough equivalent of 27-450mm in full-frame terms, this all-in-one zoom will be an intriguing option for travel photographers and those looking to keep lens-swapping to a minimum.

Notable features include a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:2 at the wide end of the zoom range, a 67mm filter thread size that's shared with several other Tamron lenses, and built-in stabilization which will be especially handy for those photographers using a camera body without an in-body stabilizer.

The Tamron 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD will be available for Fujifilm X-Mount on October 28, 2021 at $699 USD (though this is subject to change given the current state of the global supply chain). The Sony E-Mount model should be available immediately.

TAMRON Announces the Launch of the World’s First[1] All-In-One Zoom with 16.6X Zoom Ratio for Fujifilm X-mount

September 29, 2021, Commack, NY - Tamron USA, Inc. announces the launch date of the previously announced 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A[2] VC VXD. The Fujifilm X-Mount model B061X will be on sale October 28, 2021, at $699 USD. Due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule could change. The Sony e-mount model of this new lens will be available in September 2021.

The 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 VC VXD covers a wide zoom range from approximately 27mm to 450mm in full-frame equivalent focal length. The first[1] APS-C mirrorless camera zoom lens in the world with a 16.6x zoom ratio, the lens delivers the benefits of a versatile all-in-one zoom lens ideal for an extensive array of photographic scenarios. Its AF drive system uses TAMRON’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism for superior quietness and agile performance. The lens includes special lens elements arranged precisely to maintain high resolution performance from edge-to-edge and provide high image quality making it the best of all all-in-one zoom lenses.

Moreover, with an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 5.9” at the 18mm wide end and a remarkable maximum magnification ratio of 1:2, this lens performs astonishingly well when shooting up close. The lens is equipped with TAMRON's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism, effectively reducing image blur caused by camera shake in low-light conditions or in the ultra-telephoto range at slower shutter speeds.

Also, same as most other TAMRON lenses for mirrorless cameras, the lens features a unified 67mm filter size. With a wide variety of other features for comfortable shooting, this is a highly versatile lens that allows you to easily enjoy high image quality from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

1. The world’s first 16.6x all-in-one zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras

The 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 VC VXD is the world's first lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with a 16.6x zoom ratio, the greatest feature of this lens, covering wide angle to an ultra-telephoto range. The full-frame equivalent focal length range is from 27mm to 450mm. With this broad coverage, it empowers shooting in a wide variety of situations, including everyday life and travel snapshots, both wide-angle and dynamic ultra-telephoto landscape photography and macro photography.

2. Best-in-class, extremely fast and precise AF provided by VXD linear motor focus mechanism

The 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 VC VXD utilizes TAMRON's proprietary VXD linear motor focus mechanism. It achieves AF speed and precision that stand among the best of all all-in-one zoom lenses. Throughout its range, from wide-angle to ultra-telephoto, it provides precise AF shooting. Excellent when tracking a moving subject in focus, it is ideal when photographing animals, aircraft, railways, and other moving subjects. It’s extremely quiet, and therefore perfectly suited for both still and video shooting in conditions that demand silent operation.

3. MOD of 5.9” and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at wide end

With an MOD of 5.9” at the 18mm wide end and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2, the 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 VC VXD performs amazingly well when shooting up close compared to other all-in-one zoom lenses[3]. It enables users to enjoy creative macro photography with highly blurred backgrounds, a feature unique to macro photography. As a pioneer in all-in-one zoom lenses, TAMRON demonstrates unmatched originality in close-up shots.

4. The best image quality in its class

In terms of image quality, this new 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 VC VXD is one of the best-performing all-in-one zoom lenses for APS-C mirrorless cameras. To achieve a zoom ratio of 16.6x while ensuring high image quality, the lens features a well-balanced arrangement of three hybrid aspherical elements and four LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements to effectively suppress optical aberrations. Throughout the zoom range, it maintains high resolving power from the center to the corners.

5. Outstanding VC stabilization

Despite its compact size, the lens is equipped with TAMRON's proprietary VC mechanism. With or without image stabilization in the camera body, the VC included in this lens effectively mitigates camera shake that is likely to occur in low-light conditions indoors and at night. Furthermore, using AI technologies, the lens will choose the compensation characteristic for videography at focal lengths of 70mm or less.

6. Comfortably compact

7. User-friendly features (Moisture-Resistant Construction, Fluorine Coating, Zoom Lock switch)

8. Compatible with many camera-specific features and functions, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF

Tamron announces 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD and 28-75mm F2.8 G2

Tamron has announced a 35-150mm F2-2.8 fast, flexible zoom for full-frame, alongside a second-gen version of its 28-75mm F2.8 standard zoom lens.

Tamron describes its 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD as a 'travel zoom' with wide-to-telephoto coverage. We're not sure we'd consider 35mm wide enough to describe it in quite those terms, but it's certainly a usefully fast zoom that covers a very useful range of focal lengths. It can also be used as an approximately 53-225mm equiv on APS-C cameras, with the expected reduction in equivalent aperture.

The lens uses the company's VXD linear motor, which the company says will give fast, precise autofocus, including full compatibility with Sony's Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF systems.

Minimum focus distance ranges from 33cm (13") at the wide end to 85cm (33.5") at full tele, giving a maximum magnification ratio that ranges from 1:5.7 to 1:5.9.

The 35-150mm will be available for Sony E-mount, making it the first zoom for that system to offer a maximum aperture of F2. It features a 'connector port' which allows it to be connected to a computer for firmware updates or customization. This requires an optional connection cable, but Tamron describes its 'Tamron Connector Cable' as a simple USB-A-to-USB-C lead, so it's unlikely to add significant cost.

The 35-150mm is 89.2mm wide and 158mm (6.2") long and accepts 82mm filters. It weighs 1.17kg (41.1oz).

Meanwhile, the company has also released a second-generation 'G2' version of its 28-75mm F2.8 standard zoom for E-mount. The 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 has been redesigned to make use of a VXD linear focus motor, rather than the RXD stepper motor used in the original lens. This should result in faster, smoother autofocus.

The change required a complete change in the optical design, with the G2 version made up of 17 elements in 15 groups, rather than 15 elements and 12 groups in the original lens. The length of the lens remains the same but the diameter increases from 73mm (2.9") to nearly 76m (3.0"). The weight falls a fraction to 540g (19oz) from 550g (19.4oz).

Critically, though, Tamron's calculated MTF plots show the lens should be significantly sharper away from the center than the original design.

Both lenses will be available from October 28th, with the 35-150mm F2-2.8mm Di II VXD set to sell for around $1899, and the 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 selling with a recommended price of $899, a $100 premium over the older version.

35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058)

September 29, 2021, Commack, NY - Tamron USA, Inc. announces the launch date of the 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058), a fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras on October 28, 2021, at $1899. Due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule could change.

The 35-150mm F2-2.8 is a zoom lens that covers the range from wide-angle (35mm) through telephoto (150mm) and is ideal for travel photography. It is the first zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras to have a maximum wide-open aperture of F2. With this focal range, you can enjoy shooting magnificent views and large buildings at 35mm and dynamic close-up shots at 150mm. Travel photographers can easily take beautiful sunrise and sunset shots, shoot distinctive exterior buildings and interiors like restaurants, and take twilight and nightscape photos. With high-level performance under a wide variety of shooting conditions, this new fast lens is ideal for trips aimed at creating photographic works. In addition, by incorporating the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism, the lens features a very high-speed and high-precision autofocus for a fast-aperture lens. It also incorporates a new design in the pursuit of enhanced operability and ergonomic convenience.

This lens supports the full array of frequently used angles-of-view including wide-angle, standard, medium telephoto and telephoto, making it easy to compose the perfect shot without changing your position from the subject.

Proprietary software tool TAMRON Lens Utility™ for lens function customization

This lens is compatible with the new TAMRON Lens Utility software originally and uniquely developed by TAMRON. TAMRON Lens Utility can be operated using computer by connecting the lens from its Connector Port via the optional TAMRON Connection Cable[2]. PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

1. The world's first F2-2.8 fast-aperture zoom lens

The new 35-150mm F2-2.8 features a fast maximum aperture of F2 at the 35 mm focal length, compared to the typical F2.8 fast-aperture zoom lenses. This lens enables you to achieve enhanced, beautiful bokeh style even on the wide-angle end of the lens's focal range. The faster F2 aperture allows use of higher shutter speeds and lower ISO settings, so users enjoy less potential camera shake and reduce high-ISO image noise.

2. Versatile zoom range provides seamless shooting from wide-angle 35mm to telephoto 150mm

The 35mm to 150mm zoom range of the new Model A058 is ideal for travel photography because you can do so much with just one lens. You can capture snapshots at the wide angle of 35mm or standard angle of 50mm, close-up portraits at 85mm and telephoto shots at 150mm. The responsive zoom ring enables you to continue shooting as you shift from wide to telephoto seamlessly and smoothly without changing lenses—which is convenient for video as well as still photography.

3. Outstanding optical performance throughout the zoom range

Thanks to the latest optical design featuring four LD (Low Dispersion) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements optimally arranged, the 35-150mm F2-2.8 provides superior optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. Even when used with today’s extra-high-resolution digital cameras, it consistently achieves high image quality to the edges of the frame and reduces onion ring bokeh (concentric circles) while presenting a beautiful, soft bokeh style that is achieved only by fast apertures.

The versatile zoom range enables photographers to express themselves freely while capturing images focal lengths they are familiar with, including 35mm, 50mm (considered “normal” or standard), 85mm (mid-telephoto length commonly used for portraits), 100 mm or 135 mm, as well as the maximum 150mm tele focal length—and any focal length in between. It’s like six lenses in one!

4. Fast, quiet VXD linear motor mechanism for high-speed and high-precision autofocus

The lens's AF drive uses the linear motor focus mechanism VXD. The high-speed, high-precision AF provides the lens with superior responsiveness to the photographer’s actions, delivering stable and reliable focusing even with fast-aperture lenses, from the MOD (Minimum Object Distance) to infinity. The 35-150mm F2-2.8 offers excellent focus tracking of moving objects so you are ready for those important moments. Additionally, the focus motor is quiet, so it is ideal for shooting both still images and video in situations that demand low noise.

5. Superior close-focusing capability with an MOD of 0.33m (13 in) at the wide end for creative close-ups

6. Compact body with 35-150mm zoom range and fast F2 maximum aperture

7. New design provides enhanced grip and greater intuitive operation

8. Moisture-Resistant Construction, Fluorine Coating, and hood with locking mechanism for greater convenience

9. Compatible with many camera-specific features and functions, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF

With two optimally arranged LD (Low Dispersion) and GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements, optical aberrations are controlled to the maximum degree possible. Image quality at wide-open aperture has been significantly improved over the predecessor Model A036, offering extremely high resolution throughout the entire zoom range and from edge-to-edge of the frame. The lens also delivers the soft and beautiful bokeh effects distinctive to fast-aperture lenses. The new 28-75mm F2.8 G2 achieves extremely high performance when paired with high-grade, ultra-high resolution digital cameras and is the same compact size as its predecessor Model A036.

2. Fast, quiet VXD linear motor for high-speed and high-precision autofocus

The AF drive system employs TAMRON’s VXD linear motor focus mechanism. The high-speed, high-precision AF is exceedingly responsive to the actions of the photographer, providing a dependable and steady focusing experience from the MOD to infinity, despite the fast F2.8 aperture. Focusing speed has been improved approximately twice[2] as fast as its predecessor. The lens offers excellent focus tracking of moving objects, so you are ready for those important moments. Additionally, the focus motor is quiet, so it is ideal for shooting both still images and video in situations that demand low noise.

3. MOD of 7.1” at 28mm and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7 for creative close-ups

The Model A063 features an MOD of 7.1” at the wide end, an improvement over the 7.5” limit of the Model A036. The working distance shrinks to around 1.7” when operating at the MOD. With a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, you can get close to your subject for wide macro photography, enabling powerful visual impact with the subject large while keeping a wide view of the background in frame.

4. New design provides enhanced texture and greater user-friendliness

The all-new 28-75mm F2.8 G2 incorporates a new design that becomes the hallmark of TAMRON lenses introduced in the future. Changes to the texture of the zoom ring surface and focus ring surface improve the grip and enhance ease of operation. The surface of the lens exterior is shiny black, much glossier than previous models. Improved abrasion resistance makes the lens harder to scratch and resists fingerprints. In addition, certain internal parts have been enhanced. These advancements result in smoother overall operability. TAMRON has also adjusted the resistance and torque of the zoom ring to facilitate smoother and more precise operation.

5. Lightweight, compact design with emphasis on ease of use, plus 67mm filter size

6. Compatible with many camera-specific features and functions, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF

Animal Friends Comedy Pet Photo Awards 2021

Today, 40 photo and three video finalists were announced for the Animal Friends Comedy Pet Photo Awards, 2021. Over 2000 entries were submitted from around the world. Created by Paul Joyson-Hicks and Tom Sullam, the competition was created to celebrate the vital role pets play in our lives. A partnership with Animals Friends Insurance will allow the organizers to donate £10,000 to Animal Support Angels.

'It has been a very odd 24 months for most of us, but one heartwarming life-affirming and consistent presence has kept many of us relatively sane and definitely happier than we might have been: our pet (or pets!),' says Sullam.

The Category and Overall winners will be announced in November. The photographer with the top image will receive a £2,000 cash prize. The entire gallery can be viewed on the Pet Photo Awards' website.

Exposure X7 announced: Features new masking tool, customizable workspaces & more

Exposure Software has announced Exposure X7, its latest RAW photo editing application. Exposure X7, which can be used as a standalone app or as a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, adds numerous new features, including a new masking tool, improved workspace design, and more.

Exposure X7 is an all-in-one photo editing solution, offering users organizational tools, non-destructive RAW editing, layers-based editing, intelligent masking tools, over 500 customizable presets, one-click automatic adjustments and more.

Focusing on masking tools first, this is an area where Exposure X7 is significantly improved. The new Polygon Selection tool allows the user to draw a rough border around an object. After drawing a rough outline, Exposure X7 will use its intelligent algorithms to make a precise selection, allowing you to separate a subject from the background easily. You can see the new tool in action in the video overview below.

Exposure X7 includes additional improvements, including new editing workspaces. There are dedicated workspaces within the standalone app for particular tasks, including image culling, editing and retouching. Users can also create new customized workspaces.

The crop and transform tools have been unified into a single easy-to-use interface, as well. Further, new composition guides have been added to Exposure X7, including guides for golden ratio, golden spiral, golden triangle and diagonal compositions.

Exposure X7 features additional improvements to the overall image editing experience beyond the new masking tools. As laid out by Exposure Software, other new features include:

  • Defective pixel removal is available for RAW photos
  • Faithful color reproduction when using custom DCP color profiles
  • Improved color fidelity when working with DNG files
  • Fine texture noise can be added to recover detail with aggressive noise reduction

Although not a 'new' feature, Exposure X7 promises significant speed advantages compared to Adobe Lightroom and Capture One, thanks to GPU optimization. Exposure Software states that Exposure X7 is 112% faster than Adobe Lightroom at generating 500 RAW image file previews. In Exposure's testing, Capture One is 22% faster than Lightroom, by the way. Exposure X7 is a catalog-free photo editor, meaning that the software shows images from wherever you point the application. There's no strict import process. You can still organize your images, of course, using keywords and collections. If you're interested in switching from Lightroom, Exposure includes a Lightroom Migration Tool, as well.

If you want to catch up on what was added in Exposure X6 and get a good sense of what the software can do, check out our Exposure X6 software review. We gave the software 4 out of 5 stars in our review, citing strong image editing performance. We also knocked the editor for a heavy interface, which we hope is improved thanks to the new workspaces.

We also pointed out that Exposure X6 lacked camera and lens support relative to the competition. You can visit Exposure to view camera and lens support for Exposure X7. You can also try the software for yourself via a free 30-day trial.

Exposure X7 is available now for $129 for new users. An upgrade is available for $89, although if you purchased Exposure X6 on or after July 15, 2021, Exposure Software will be sending you a free upgrade to Exposure X7 soon. An Exposure X7 Bundle is also available, and it includes integrated Snap Art natural media and Blow Up photo enlargement tools and plug-ins.
