Leica releases $5,995 limited-edition 'Dawn' Q2 in collaboration with British singer Seal

Leica has announced its latest special-edition camera, the Leica Q2 ‘Dawn,’ made in collaboration with British singer-songwriter, Seal. The camera features an all-black design with a unique Japanese-woven fabric and will be limited to just 500 units.

Leica says the camera pays ‘homage to the soulful lyrics of Seal’s songs’ and ‘celebrates the human connection in the art of making a photograph’ by ‘Drawing inspiration from the golden glow of sunrise and the dance between light and shadows.’

As is common with Leica’s special-edition cameras, the Q2 ‘Dawn’ remains unchanged from its less-special counterpart in terms of specifications and performance. The changes come in the form of a new paint job, a specialized fabric and a few Seal-branded accessories.

Specifically, the Q23 ‘Dawn’ features an all-black paint job wrapped with a fabric covering produced by Japanese brand, Hosoo. Leica describes the fabric as ‘an innovative milestone in the art of weaving, using black thread (93% polyester) and gold-colored Japanese paper (7% washi)’ and says it’s inspired by the Japanese phrase ‘komorebi,’ which roughly translates to ‘the transparency and interplay of light which occurs when sunlight falls through a tree canopy.’

A scarf included in the set is designed by multimedia artist Annina Roescheisen and produced by New York fashion label Rag & Bone in Italy. An included rope camera strap is also included with Seal’s ‘you became the light on the dark side of me’ lyrics from his song ‘Kiss from a Rose’ printed on it. The camera also has Seal’s signature and the camera’s edition number engraved into the camera.

Underneath the new aesthetics is the same 47.3MP sensor with a fixed Summilux 28mm F1.7 lens in front capable of capturing 14-bit stills as DNGs or JPEGs and 4K video at up to 30fps.

The Leica Q2 ‘Dawn’ is limited to 500 units and is available to purchase through Leica’s online shop for $5,995, which is surprisingly only $200 more expensive than the standard Q2.
