Tilta set to release half-cage for Sony cameras with an integrated 512GB M.2 SSD

Camera accessory manufacturer Tilta appears to be releasing a rather unique storage solution for select Sony E-mount camera systems. According to leaked press materials shared by CameraBeta, Tilta has partnered with Zhiyong Technology Co. to create a cage-style handle with an integrated 512GB M.2 SSD inside that photos and video can be stored to.

At first glance, the device looks like your standard grip-style half cage. However, attached to the bracket is a CFexpress Type-A adapter that can slide into the memory card slot and feed data directly to a 512GB M.2 drive built into the handle. According to the promotional images, this system will work on Sony’s a1, a7S III, a7 IV and FX3 full-frame E-mount cameras.

Getting the data off the handle can be done via an integrated USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2x2) port situated on the front of the grip, behind a rubberized cover. According to data provided by Tilta, the integrated SSD offers read and write speeds of 945MB/s and 852MB/s, respectively. Tilta also suggests the write speed from the camera to the SSD tops out at 700MB/s, which, in theory, should be enough to support the highest recording modes possible with each of these cameras, including 4K All-I 4:2:2 10-bit capture at up to 120fps.

Other features include an integrated status light for seeing when data is being written to the SSD, an opening so you can easily change out the batteries without having to remove the bracket, a slot for adding the included wrist strap and a silicone grip on the rear for more comfortable handling.

Tilta’s promotional material suggests the CFexpress Type A to M.2 SSD halde adapter will retail for ¥4,500CNY, which is roughly $645.
